Winkle’s Ball Club, as the name denotes, is the nickname of the founder, owner and commissioner (F.O.C.) himself, Mr. Rowell “winkle” C. Rivero. He has been know as such for most of his life thus named his ball club Winkle’s Ball Club. Winkle as a person is very outgoing and the do-it-yourself kind of guy. He dwells on just about anything he can have his hands on. Basketball is Winkle’s favorite sport ever since and he plays every chance he can get. And so with the thought of being able to play basketball, he came to put up the ball club. 2005th was the year Winkle started his club and along with it he invited his friends, students, young professionals to join him in this endeavor of his. He only had one pre-requisite though; one who wants to enter must love basketball and not just join for the habit of it. It went on smoothly from just about 10 person playing basketball a day to about 30 or more, still in a day. Frequent players then were qualified to become members and members went on to invite some friends to play. Thus Winkle’s Ball Club grew to a number nobody thought possible. But that came to a halt; Winkle would not have thought that a situation could make him stop what he dearly loves.

May of that year, a chronic back pain had been bugging Winkle for quite some time. Thinking it was just stress and lack of rest that caused it, he opted to play basketball less often as he could. But the persistent pain he endures escalated, even came to a point where he could barely stand straight and sit properly still even for a minute. Pain always sought to evade even with the simplest task. Consequently, Winkle had to see a specialist to sought help with his condition. Then it was found out that he has spina bifida, where the outer part of one of his vertebrae is not completely closed, and a slightly malpositioned lumbar vertebra, and was found out that he had this since birth. This caused his spinal column to be unstable to withstand his day-to-day physical activities including basketball, as he grew older. The orthopedic then prescribed medicines and a 5 day rest, and not only that, recommended that winkle should refrain from playing strenuous sports, including basketball. This felt like a boulder had fallen unto Winkle. He was in disbelief that he wouldn’t be able to play basketball anymore. As he rested, he was haunted by the thought of letting a week go by without basketball, and it wandered through sleepless nights. He had to choose, his ailing back or his love for the game of basketball.

Recuperating from his back pain had Winkle also thinking a lot about the ball club, how will it fair without him playing? Going back to the gym and being unable to play was hard to fathom, it’s as if basketball runs in his veins but being lured by it could create havoc in his system. It was though like the chance of having a ball club was just a figment of his imagination, and it could just be blown away. It was now a choice between letting the ball club go, or sticking with it and just let things fall into its place. There was a lot to think about and it wasn’t easy. Members came to ask Winkle to go on with the ball club. After a lot of thinking, encouragement and support, Winkle came to a conclusion; yes he will continue with the club. He went on with the ball club and surely, the club grew. Now enjoying the sideline and being the commissioner, Winkle aims to continue on with the growing ball club, and with God’s will, it’s continuing to prosper. Winkle simply now enjoys organizing the club tournament leagues as well as its regular games which is every Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. And suffice it to say, the club is now an incorporation registered under SEC reg no.CN200826759. Winkle had the ball club registered so as to avoid any inconvenience and transgression that the ball club may endure. And thankfully enough, Winkle’s Ball Club is now almost in full circle, it just recently got its own domain, this domain, and of course it’s named winklesballclub.com. This domain opts to support its players in the tournament and in the regular games.

Now on its 6th year, Winkle’s Ball Club still aims to uphold sportsmanship and friendship in its members and hopefully continue to progress with the sport of basketball and for the love of the game. It was a struggle at the start but all through it all, Winkle’s Ball Club is simply amazing!!!
